Kaupapa

“As a producer who works across much of the motu, I’ve had the privilege of being part of many events centred on writers and writing – and the overwhelming sense I took was of a yearning for connection. Our literary festivals are critical for coming together and sharing ideas, yes, but what fills those gaps outside of those spaces? How are those connections formed when you’re not part of ‘the scene’? Ableism, elitism and classism are all alive and well across art forms in Aotearoa and the writing sector is no different. How then do we begin to bridge those gaps? What about those of us who reside in the regions, where opportunities, infrastructure and resources are far more limited? And it was out of these provocations that Ōtepoti Writers Lab was born…shortly thereafter, also lovingly referred to as ŌWL. What a hoot.”
