Expensive Hobby is collectively run by Katie Kerr (GLORIA Books), Samuel Walsh (Dead Bird Books) and Chris Holdaway (Compound Press) for the distribution and promotion of independent publications to stockists in Aotearoa. We support small press and independent publishers producing high-quality books and magazines.

Compound Press was founded in 2012 after hours in the print room of an unnamed law firm with appropriated materials. Today we use all-recycled materials to print and bind our books in our own workshop in Auckland, New Zealand, and maintain a particular though non-exclusive commitment to poetry of the Pacific Region while sea-levels still permit.

Dead Bird Books (DBB) is an independent publishing company based in Tāmaki Makaurau. The press was started by author and poet, Dominic Hoey and arts facilitator and producer Samuel Walsh, after seeing a lack of opportunity for writers whose work sits outside the margins of Aotearoa’s traditional publishing landscape. We want to create space for writers to publish political, subversive and at times provocative books and make sure they receive the promotion and support they deserve.

GLORIA is an intercontinental publishing platform that focusses on the publication of art and photography books. GLORIA approaches the production of the book as a complete process; from concept to design to print. The artist is heavily involved in every step, producing objects that are a full expression of their intention.

GLORIA is run by photographer Alice Connew and graphic designer Katie Kerr.

5ever is an underground publishing house based at Rebel Press, Trades Hall in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. We print, splice, bind and chop pesky dank little books. Our scope is nebulous. Form and sense of disciplinarity remains plural. We are serious in our playfulness.

Economic and Social Research Aotearoa (ESRA) is a left-wing think tank committed to quality research, debate & analysis, grounded in a kaupapa of economic, social, ecological & Tiriti justice. Active since 2015, our activities are aimed at producing an intellectual arsenal for the radical left in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Hue & Cry was a New Zealand art and literary journal and independent literary press founded by Chloe Lane in 2007. Though no longer active, Expensive Hobby continues to represent the back catalogue.

The Physics Room is a contemporary art space dedicated to developing and promoting contemporary art and critical discourse in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Titus Books prints and publishes New Zealand writers whose work challenges easy categorisation. Titus is not a school. Titus is a platform.

Saufo’i Press is a publishing house that publishes Moana Pacific poetry books in Aotearoa. We share stories that are beautiful, joyful, sacred, not-to-be-f***ed with. We believe in vibes, the divine, in synchronicity, in peace, and love. We gas up our writers for real. We rejoice in the uniqueness of each culture from our sea of islands. We take heed from our ancestors. We do this for them.

Tender Press is an independent publisher based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. Our aim is to publish exciting writing that might not find a home elsewhere. We have a particular interest in work by queer, indigenous, POC, disabled, and otherwise marginalised writers.

Anahera Press was founded by editor and poet Kiri Piahana-Wong in July 2011. We are a proudly Maori small press publishing house with a focus on poetry. We publish tangata whenua first and foremost, but also have a general interest in providing a publication platform for writers of colour.
